💀The Serpent Queen Season 3: Cancelled 💀

Starz Cancels The Serpent Queen After Two Seasons — Queen Elizabeth Spinoff in the Works 👑

The Serpent Queen has been dethroned. Starz has cancelled the historical drama series after two seasons, dashing fans’ hopes for more of Catherine de Medici’s cunning reign.

However, there’s a silver lining for those still hungry for more intrigue from this regal universe: a potential Queen Elizabeth I spinoff is already in development 🏰✨.

The cancellation decision comes just over a month after Season 2 wrapped its run, concluding Catherine’s tumultuous story arc. Despite a stellar reception — both seasons earned a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and made it onto several Top 10 lists — the series reportedly faced declining viewership numbers, partially due to the almost two-year gap between Seasons 1 and 2, causing some early fans not to return.

Cast to Be Paid Despite No Season 3 🎭

While the curtain has officially fallen, there’s some good news for the cast members: their contracts had been picked up prior to the cancellation, meaning they will still be compensated for the unproduced Season 3 episodes. This reflects Starz’s early optimism about the show’s future before the official decision to ax it.

A New Queen on the Horizon: Queen Elizabeth Spinoff Planned 💫

But loyal fans won’t have to bid adieu to The Serpent Queen’s world entirely. The creative team behind the original show, including writer/executive producer Justin Haythe and executive producer Erwin Stoff, is already developing a spinoff series centered around Queen Elizabeth I. While no talent is attached yet, Minnie Driver, who portrayed the British Queen in Season 2, is expected to reprise her role if the project moves forward.

Why Did The Serpent Queen End? 📉

While both seasons of The Serpent Queen received high praise from critics and strong reviews, the lengthy delay between seasons may have fractured its viewership momentum. After initially pulling in strong numbers during its debut season in 2022, the nearly two-year hiatus led to a drop in viewership, making it challenging for the show to sustain its audience despite the critical acclaim.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation of The Serpent Queen?

About The Serpent Queen TV Series

A historical drama with an edge, "The Serpent Queen" puts a contemporary spin on conventional storytelling to tell the tale of Catherine de Medici (Morton) who against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. The series begins when 14-year-old, orphaned Catherine marries into the 16th-century French court. With her future uncertain, she must quickly learn who she can trust - both within her personal entourage of courtiers and the members of the royal court - while outmaneuvering anyone who underestimates her determination to survive at any cost.

In season two, Catherine de Medici is Queen Regent of France now that her son, Charles IX has come of age. Distracted by the personal conflicts of the Valois children, a new mysterious prophet named Edith gains a loyal following who vow to challenge the current religious establishment, sparking tension across the country. Feeling threatened by the rising strain, the divided court turn to their own schemes for selfish benefit. The Guises commit unholy acts while the Bourbons turn to a familiar foreign sovereign, Queen Elizabeth I of England in hopes of personal gain.

As France falls into political and religious turmoil, Catherine struggles to maintain her power, but The Serpent Queen will do whatever she needs to regain control.
