Gossip Girl Season 3 Cancelled On HBO Max – HBO Max Series To Land Elsewhere?

The gossip ends here.

HBO max has cancelled Gossip Girl after two seasons, with the streaming company taking the axe to yet another series.

And, according to showrunner Joshua Safran, the sequel series’ demise was to be expected.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, he conceded:

Unfortunately it was to be expected in a way because of what’s happening at all streamers these days. Things are just going different ways than we all would hope. That Golden Age is coming to an end. [Also] It takes a lot of money to look this good.”

Along with the cost of making Gossip Girl, Safran suspects the HBO/Discovery merger also played its part in downing the show:

I’m sure the merger had something to do with it, but also we are very expensive. Even if there hadn’t been a merger, who knows? I don’t know numbers, I can’t speak to that.

How many seasons of Gossip Girl were planned? Safran wanted 3 or 4 seasons:

We actually had a season three mini-room where we arched out the season last year during the shooting of season two—it was a while ago. So, I would’ve loved to have seen season three come to light because the plot was amazing. Would’ve been honestly happy if it ended after season three. My goal was to get to four seasons because then they would’ve graduated with the exception of Zoya and Shan. My point was to do a semester a year and do four seasons and be done, I would’ve really liked to get it to the end of season three. We were asked at some point awhile back to add cliffhangers to the finale of season two. And we did, and I feel bad about that. However, graciously, HBO Max afforded me the opportunity to go back in and amend some of the stuff in the finale at the end. It doesn’t all get tied up, but the story engine for season three was launched at the end of season two, and I removed that.

So it’s the end of the road for Gossip Girl on HBO Max, but could the series ‘pull a Minx‘ and end up elsewhere? Safran isn’t holding his breath, with the show’s expense being a major factor.
